The Continuum Robotics Laboratory team attended the 2024 Toronto Robotics Conference hosted by the University of Toronto Robotics Institute. Held at the University of Toronto Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the event was a gathering of UofT’s robotics labs, the local robotics community, and industry partners, all coming together to showcase the latest research and technological advancements.

Dr. Tongjia Zheng, our new post-doc, led an one-hour talk on CRL’s research mission to develop autonomous continuum robots designed to address challenges in both medical and industrial settings. Graduate students Jimmy Shentu, Spencer Teetaert, Reinhard Grassmann, Chloe Pogue, and Puspita Dewi shared the stage to present their recent works in modeling, motion planning, sensing, state estimation, control, and design.

A standout moment of the conference was Puspita’s presentation and poster on her work, “A Lightweight Modular Segment Design for Tendon-driven Continuum Robots with Pre-programmable Stiffness.” Her innovative design and practical applications garnered significant attention and were ultimately recognized with the Best Poster Award. Congraluations!!

As the two-day conference comes to a close, the CRL team reflects on a series of enlightening talks and stimulating discussions with peers. Puspita shared her excitement: “This conference was such a great experience, providing me with a comprehensive overview of the latest research across various labs at UofT. Engaging with fellow researchers, sharing perspectives, and exploring new possibilities has been truly inspiring!”

We look forward to returning to the conference in 2025!
