We’re super excited to welcome two new graduate students, Ella and Mika, who have joined us as MASc candidates in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) programme. We’re looking forward to having them on the team and seeing all the great work they’ll bring to the lab!

At the same time, we want to give a big shout-out to Zoe, who finished her MSc in Computer Science this August! We’re so proud of her and wish her all the best in what comes next.

Ella

Hi! My name is Ella, and I’m thrilled to be starting my Master’s of Applied Science in Mechanical & Industrial Engineering this September. I have just completed my Bachelor’s of Applied Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, throughout which I worked as a research student at The Center for Image-Guided Innovation and Therapeutic Intervention at The Hospital for Sick Children. My undergraduate research focused on creating virtual training simulators for surgical robotics procedures. Some of my hobbies include: painting, rock climbing, and geocaching! I’m excited to be joining CRL co-supervised with the Microrobotics Lab, and I’m eager to start exploring the application of magnetic principles to the localization and/or control of continuum robots.

Mika

Hi everyone! I’m Mika and I am joining the Continuum Robotics Lab this semester as a MASc MIE student. I recently graduated with a BASc in Integrated Engineering with a specialization in computer science and electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia. At UBC, I participated in robotics and teleoperation research at the Robotics and Control Lab where I worked on a novel human teleultrasound system. At CRL, I hope to delve into research relating to human-robotic interaction and motion planning. Outside of the lab, I enjoy knitting, reading, watching and playing soccer, and playing Pokemon GO.
